Avionic Humour

Pre-Christmas Flight Check

Santa Claus, like all pilots, gets regular visits from the Federal Aviation Administration, and the FAA examiner arrived last week for the pre-Christmas flight check.

In preparation, Santa had the elves wash the sled and bathe all the reindeer. Santa got his logbook out and made sure all his paperwork was in order. He knew they would examine all his equipment and truly put Santa's flying skills to the test...

The examiner walked slowly around the sled. He checked the reindeer harnesses, the landing gear, and Rudolph's nose. He painstakingly reviewed Santa's weight and balance calculations for the sled's enormous payload.

Finally, they were ready for the checkride. Santa got in and fastened his seatbelt and shoulder harness and checked the compass. Then the examiner hopped in carrying, to Santa's surprise, a shotgun.

"What's that for?!?" asked Santa incredulously.

The examiner winked and said, "I'm not supposed to tell you this ahead of time," as he leaned over to whisper in Santa's ear, "but you're gonna lose an engine on takeoff."

In the Hangar: Bell 206B with Comprehensive Upgrades
In its time here at Maxcraft, this Bell 206B has received a most comprehensive avionic upgrade. In addition to the ever-desirable (and increasingly common) combination of Garmin GTN750 Navigator and G500H Primary flight display, this aircraft also received a myriad of other systems which elevate the capability of this private aircraft from merely good, to great. These additional systems and equipment are not all immediately obvious from a single glance at the panel, and include remote boxes, as well as a number of small extras which really complete the installation. Read more here.
Detection of system condition, mode or user selection used to be a matter of 'feeling' or 'scanning' a bank of switches to determine what position a particular switch or bank of switches was in. Often in the dark, smudged, dirty or even missing placards could turn this into an act of faith.
Old annunciator

Remote visual annunciation has been with us in newer cockpits for some time, letting the flight crew know about system condition as well as detection of possible problems. To augment analog or digital display systems, Visual Annunciators perform a vital part in informing a pilot as to the safety of an aircraft. These devices prove particularly useful in the course of modifying aircraft systems.

Located within the cockpit, and typically within in the line of sight of the pilot, customized annunciators relay the status of the various systems to the pilot. An aircraft system may not only be required to indicate abnormal or emergency conditions, but could also indicate that the systems are functioning properly with no faults.
Modern annunciator

Seemingly endless guidance is available in the form of Letter and Numeral Design, Flightcrew Alerting, Display Marking, NVIS or NVG colour spectrum requirements, Human Factors for Aircraft Cockpit Lighting. High-quality aerospace manufacturers take as many of these issues into account in the design and configuration of their annunciator products. The best annunciator manufacturers give you the tools to customize their product without inflicting long manufacturing lead times, or delivering something you didn't ask for.

Where cockpit lighting technology has been stuck in the stone ages for some time, the wide spread use of newer manufacturing technologies in aerospace has given us never before seen access to display options and durability in annunciator products.

Maxcraft is very active in multiple tradeshows around North America. Just recently we sent our team to the Helicopter Association of Canada Conference (HAC).

HAC held their 20th Annual Conference & Trade Show at the Vancouver Convention Centre. HAC's President & CEO said, "HAC is planning its largest tradeshow ever, with roughly 120 exhibitors, and static display of aircraft. Maxcraft sent Alex, Steve, Daryl to man our booth and speak to customers.

For the first time Maxcraft had a booth at NBAA's Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA2015), Nov. 17 to 19 in Las Vegas, NV. With more than 1,100 exhibits and two static displays of aircraft, the show's 26,000 attendees arrived to learn more about the latest and greatest the industry has to offer. Daryl and Steve worked the booth and met with clients and vendors.
