TAWS Regulations now in effect!

TAWS Rules

Transport Canada issued the final amendments to the CARs mandating which aircraft require a Terrain Awareness Warning System (TAWS) on July 4th.  Aircraft manufactured before July 4, 2012 have two years after the date of the final rule to have a TSO-C151b-compliant TAWS Systems installed and Transport Canada- certified.

The Transport Canada TAWS regulations also require that the TAWS equipment incorporate a unique Canadian requirement for Enhanced Altitude Accuracy (EAA) functionality.  All TAWS Systems must address the EAA requirement within 5 years of the date of the rule’s promulgation.

The Definition of TAWS:

Terrain Awareness Warning System which is an aircraft system that is intended to provide the flight crew with both aural and visual alerts to aid in preventing inadvertent controlled flight into terrain, obstacles or water.

TAWS Class B

The Class B system provides a good level of protection at a reasonable cost and it will be required for Private turbine-powered Aeroplanes configured with 6 or more seats, excluding pilot seats, commercial subpart 703 air taxi Aeroplanes configures with 6 or more seats excluding pilot seats and Commuter subpart 704 Aeroplanes configured with 6 to 9 passenger seats excluding pilot seats.

TAWS Class A

The Class A system provides the highest level of protection but it has a significantly higher cost than a Class B system.  It will be required in commuter subpart 704 Aeroplanes configured with 10 or more passenger seats, excluding pilot seats and in aeroplanes operating under subpart 705 airline operations.

Maxcraft Avionics installs and certifies Garmin G500H Glass Panel

Phoenix Helicopters Eurocopter AS335N

Coinciding with Maxcraft’s STC development, certification, and install of the Garmin G500H system for the Eurocopter AS355 rotorcraft, our customer added an astounding paintjob to the very same aircraft.

Maxcraft did all the work for the STC out of a Fort McMurray airbase. The aircraft belongs to Pheonix Heliflight, a large heli operator based in Fort Mac.  Work included the above mentioned G500H (dual-screen electronic flight display), custom MaxPanel with MaxDuracoat finish,  GNS430 (cutting-edge WAAS navigation GPS/NAV/COM), GTS800 ( full TAS traffic surveillance capability), RA-4500 (Radar Altimeter), GTX transponder, and custom panel lighting.

Soon after installation of the G500H and other systems, Pheonix Heliflight’s twin-engine Eurocopter AS355N received a very custom paint job: Phoenix themed and with  pink flames it was done in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness. Every flight generates a donation courtesy of Pheonix’s owner, Paul Spring. Phoenix Heliflight’s modernized flagship-bird certainly takes to the skies in style.

We will be featuring all projects our new website (in recent projects) and in our newsletters and don’t forget our July newsletter is out! Click here: Maxnews

Cessna 340

This customer had recently purchased this 6 seater Cessna 340.  Flying back and forth from  Calgary – Kelowna, often flying for business, this was the perfect aircraft.  The customer had flown in another customer’s glass panel Cessna, after which,  he came in with a list for his own aircraft.

Our crew chief had his hands full.  Adding a new panel, Garmin G500, GTS800, GTN 650, GMA350 audio and newly wrapped leather yokes, this was going to be a huge project!  Read more about this project in our newsletter and on line on our website here.

Summer has finally arrived! Are you ready?

What is summer?

For most people,  it’s camping, swimming, tanning, sunroof open, shorts, flip flops  and of course, flying!

Safety first

Be safe in the warm weather flying.  As the weather is unpredictable, thunderstorms, lightening and hail even in our summer months.  Stay alert and prepared.

As you venture out to all of those cool places to fly, make sure you have a great GPS system.  One, for navigation, but as a pilot its a great way to see the new places to fly to.  With the Garmin 796 it has the fabulous terrain and synthetic vision that shows the map in a 3d image.   There is also the Aera 500 series which are great for navigation (even if your not flying but driving that big trailer!).

For another aspect of safety, whether driving, hiking or flying, take the SPOT.  The SPOT with SOS, help and custom messages, this little gadget is great for help.

Maxcraft Avionics sends the structures guy overseas!

Tbilisi is where?

Georgia is home to 4.7 million people with Tbilisi being the largest city and capital of Georgia.   Georgia was a part of the former Soviet Union and most of the people speak Russian or Georgian.  Well, without any Russian or Georgian – off Ben went to Tbilisi!

Sent by request

Our structures technician Ben was requested by CHC to go to Tbilisi,Georgia to install a wire strike kit. After travelling for 18 hours he landed, had a couple hours sleep, and was off to work!

A seasoned professional, Ben installed the wire strike protection system on one of CHC’s Sikorsky S-76C+ helicopters. Maxcraft has had plenty of S-76 structures experience and CHC had heard we did the wire strike kits for Helijet last year.

The job went really well and was completed in a short period time.  Ben got to enjoy a test flight afterwards and had a speedy turnaround with only 8 days away from home.

People were extremely friendly, the food was great and the weather was in the mid 30’s with very little rain, and I came back with a great tan.  CHC base staff treated me like an employee. Great experience working for them.” –Ben’s comments on Tbilisi.

Good job Ben.  We look forward to hearing about your next work trip!

CBAA Tradeshow in Toronto, Ontario

Off we go!

We set off to Toronto, Ontario for the annual tradeshow at Toronto airport. The Canadian Business Aviation Association (CBAA) held their annual convention in Toronto this June.

Maxcraft had a booth at the trade show and Steve represented us.  Steve also attended the many seminars and networking events.  Steve commented  “this is an ideal event for us to meet with our commercial customers, better understand their challenges, and showcase our technology and solutions”.  Maxcraft is a member of CBAA and participates regularly in the Pacific chapters events.
