Citation Bravo gets a facelift and Wade gets a flight

The Bravo in flight!

Exterior

Maxcraft had the pleasure of having Blackcomb Aviation drop off one of their aircraft for avionic upgrades and,

The Crew (Wade featured in green)

just as the upgrades and new interior were completed, Wade, our crew chief, had the pleasure of going on the repositioning flight with the Blackcomb crew back to YVR.

 This is Wade’s story:

Interior by Port Interiors

On Sunday 29 January, 2012 Blackcomb Aviation sent two pilots in an EC120 Helicopter toPitt Meadows Airport. We departed to YVR with the recently upgraded Cessna 550 Citation Bravo with Brian as our Captain. The aircraft had had its traffic avoidance system upgraded to TCAS II, and flight management system upgraded to the latest WAAS FMS from Universal Avionics. It wasn’t a great day for flying but with an aircraft that well equipped we didn’t think twice. It was a 20 minute flight in the rain and we were in Richmond. The one comment from the crew as we exited was that the avionics were flawless!

Check out the flight from Pitt Meadows to YVR.  Click on the link below:

Happy New Year from Maxcraft Avionics!

Maxcraft had its best year ever

2011 proved to be one of the best years ever for Maxcraft.  According to our records, our guys were busy, our hangar was full and our customers were happy!

With the general and commercial aviation coming in all year, our team was busy.  With many different types of aircraft from Sikorsky helicopters to Cardinal Classics it was on-going work for all the staff.  Each of our team members   playing a different and yet important role with each and every aircraft that comes through Maxcraft, we were kept on our toes at all times.

2012 will be fabulous

For the pilots, there is always new and improved “toys” for 2012 that one can carry onto their plane.  With new flight instruments and portables  This could be the year for aircraft owners to do a bit of sprucing up to their aircraft from new panels to the new interior.  Even the simplest change can boost that “I wanna fly” feeling.

Changes at Maxcraft

We are all looking forward to 2012.  We have many changes coming to Maxcraft for 2012.  Stay in touch with our blog, newsletter and website for new and exciting announcements in the new year at Maxcraft.

Christmas and the New Year

Today is the day all the staff go home and prepare for the holidays.

We have hung the tinsel, decorated the tree, put up the garland and placed the cards on the counter.  Its now time to close up shop for the holidays.

The planes are snug in the hangar, the Christmas tree lights are unplugged, and the blowup snow man and his airplane are deflated.  We look forward to our family time, relaxing, playing with our children, or just sleeping the days away.

We will be ready well rested and prepared for the new year to come. We look forward to 2012 and hats off to 2011.

We wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year from all of us at Maxcraft! See you in 2012!

Protect your plane from winter

Be prepared and winterize your aircraft

Are you prepared?  With a crispness in the air, cold winds around us, and frost on the wings, its time to take care of your plane and prepare it for the cold weather.

Whether your flying it or storing it, here are some tips to keep your plane in tip top shape, from the exterior to your flight instruments.

Tips for storage

– change the oil

– chock the wheels, front and back

– release the parking brake to prevent the brake from seizing, while keeping your aircraft static

– blank the inlets exhaust and vents to reduce the amount of moisture able to get into your engine which can cause corrosion

– apply a canopy cover or a least tie a dust sheet over your cockpit area.  Bird dropping can be quite corrosive and etch the surface if not removed over a period of time

– apply airframe grease

– check that the fuel cocks are closed and master switches are off

– to be thorough, remove your battery

– fill the fuel tanks to avoid build up of condensation in the tanks over winter

– if not in a hangar, ensure your aircraft is secure.  Use tie down points secured to ground anchors, or concrete blocks.  Straps should not be too tight as they may alter in length depending on weather conditions.  You may want to invest into a block heater if you have access to electricity.

Not into flying this winter?

Consider investing into a heated hangar…your plane will love it.  Or while your not flying, treat yourself to an upgrade whether it be a handheld or a full on avionics upgrade,  it’s a great way to start the new year!

Confused About Traffic Systems? TCAS? PCAS?

Where do you start?

TCAS

The acronyms are confusing enough aren’t they?

The sheer number of acronyms used to describe aircraft traffic systems is enough to confuse anyone. ACAS, TCAS I, TCAS II, TAS, TIS, TCAD and PCAS all refer to systems capable of alerting pilots to nearby traffic and the possibility of a mid-air collision. It is important to understand that all of these traffic detection systems are transponder based and therefore the other aircraft must have an operating transponder in order for a collision threat to be detected.

Traffic systems can be sorted into three main categories; active, passive and data link. Active traffic systems send out a continuous stream of interrogation signals which cause transponders in nearby aircraft to issue a reply. The system processor evaluates these replies, makes a determination of the threat level and presents that information to the pilot. Passive traffic detection systems do not send out interrogation signals but instead rely on third party interrogations from ATC radar or other TCAS equipped aircraft. Traffic information service – TIS is a mode S transponder data link service offered by select ATC radar facilities in the United States.

TCAS – Traffic Collision Avoidance Systems are recognized internationally as ACAS – Airborne Collision Avoidance Systems. These active interrogating systems include two sub categories: TCAS I issues real-time traffic alerts (TA) and is typically installed on Turboprop aircraft and smaller jets. TCAS II issues traffic alerts (TA) and resolution advisories (RA) and is usually found on larger aircraft.

TAS – Traffic Advisory System is a TSO approved active interrogating system similar to TCAS I but available at a considerably lower prices. TAS products are available from Garmin, Avidyne, L3 Avionics and Honeywell. These systems can be interfaced to display traffic on a wide variety of installed electronic display systems.

TCAD – Traffic Collision Alert Device: This passive installed system is no longer in production but it was the first affordable traffic system for GA.

PCAS – Portable Collision Avoidance Systems: These passive non-interrogating portable devices provide traffic awareness at a budget price. They can be interfaced to display traffic on other portable devices.

TIS – Traffic Information System: Installation of a mode S transponder will enable the traffic data link service offered by select ATC radar facilities in theUnited States. TIS systems have an inherent delay of 5 to 15 seconds due sweeping of the ATC radar.
